BACKGROUND
Advancements in science and technology, growing industrialisation coinciding with the end of the 72 years long cold war have brought to fore means of communication. No country and nation can deny the significance of communication in this era of rapid transformation and media explosion.

Pakistani society is no exception. We have to understand the rising significance of communication if we have to keep pace with the rest of the world. The electronic media in Pakistan, including both television and radio, is being directly run by the state, therefore print media still plays the pivotal role in informing the public and carving out  public opinion.

The factual presentation of events and information, creating general awareness, forming and organizing public opinion, adherence to democratic principles and values are among the primary responsibilities of the media. The Press is commonly referred to as the fourth pillar of the state.

It is generally believed that Pakistani print media, especially newspapers have played a significant role in paving the way for democracy, and in creating awareness among public about their fundamental rights, granted and protected by the Constitution.

On the other hand, the Press is being blamed for non-professionalism and corruption. Investing some amount into a venture is believed to be the surest way to get into the news. The gap between ideological and practical journalism is increasing every day.

Ideally speaking, a journalist deals with news in a professional manner. His or her activities should be in the best interest of society. He or she should not avail any illegitimate opportunities as a reward for his or her work. He or she should respect the privacy, rights and integrity of all the concerned.

Most journalists would assert that they are doing their job earnestly and despite all the constraints and lack of resources they are struggling to keep the professional ethics. It is necessary to carry out a survey on the circumstances of the working journalists to verify the accusations and the claims.

Before pointing a finger at the journalists for corruption and nepotism, it must be determined, if they are in a position to come up to the expectations. This survey aims at analyzing the ground realities under which Pakistani journalists have to perform their professional duties.
